Glow Sticks

Glow sticks!  We love glow sticks in this house.  I buy packs by the dozens at our local dollar store.  I always have them on hand, especially during summer months when our gatherings often end after dusk around the fire pit.  Glow sticks not only provide entertainment for the children during these get-togethers, but many adults often end up with a necklace or two as well 😉  There’s just something about these mesmerizing little things that bring out the kid in all of us. 

After one summer gathering came to an end, I announced to my daughter that it was time to take a bath.  Ugh…let the battle of wills commence. Ever struggle with your kid to take a bath? In my home our bedtime routine starts with a bath, then book, then bed. So, when I say “bath time”, this translates to my daughter as “bedtime” and she never goes completely willingly.  This night was no different.  Covered in glowing necklaces, bracelets and a crown of hot pink, my daughter begged to stay up and play a bit longer. “I don’t want to take a bath! I don’t want to take off my necklaces!”  

When she realized a bath was in her future regardless of protests, she asked “can I take my necklaces in the bath with me?”  I thought about it for a second and didn’t see anything wrong with it (and I knew it would get both of us to bed faster), so I agreed.  I started her bubble bath and threw the bracelets, necklace and crown in while it was filling. 

Genius!  With the bubbles on top and the lights dimmed, this created the coolest “glowing” bath!  Since that night we have had many glow stick baths and they have yet to lose their appeal.  So, if you are sick of scrubbing those bath crayons off the tub, bored with the floating toys or just need a new method of bribery, give glow sticks a try!  Don’t forget the bubbles!

Oh, and if you ever need a good laugh – just tape a few to their pj’s and ask them to dance!
