Food. I love food. Who doesn’t? I also enjoy cooking food. I live in an apron, in my kitchen. Sort of like a 1950’s housewife. But, instead of perfectly coiffed hair, pretty dress and welcoming demeanor; it’s more like messy topknot, yoga pants and yelling “get out of my kitchen”.
I cook almost every night of the week. I’m not talking fancy schmancy meals, I do not claim to be a chef by any means. I’m just talking good, quick, warm food that fills your belly. But, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I am not a recipe kinda gal. I rarely follow a recipe when cooking. In fact, I actually find it difficult. I feel I can’t handle the pressure of exact measurements and cooking temps; the running back and forth between my spice cabinet and the recipe I’m trying to follow. I get flustered easily when I’m confined to specific rules, and the timer is always ticking when you have something on the stove. When I do try to follow a recipe exactly, it often ends up overcooked, over spiced or completely lacking. Sure, there are some recipes I’ve followed and I’ve repeated with my own variations. But, for the most part, I sort of “wing it” in the kitchen. I often browse recipes for ideas. I mean…. I’m not that talented that I can come up with a new great meal every night. I like to browse recipes on occasion and let the ingredients trigger ideas. It works for me.
I cook by sight, smell and taste. The only problem with my method of cooking is that I cannot make the same exact meal twice. In other words, I’ll make a soup that my husband loves and he’ll ask me to make it again the following week. I will, but it just doesn’t taste quite the same. Close, but no cigar. Since I don’t use measurements or a specific lists of ingredients, it’s impossible to duplicate a meal exactly. He’s always urging me to write down my recipes so I can compile them in a book so I don’t forget and so I actually have something to give friends when they ask for one. But again, that leads to the running back and forth flustered problem! Plus, it is not so easy to measure out a dash here and a sprinkle there.
Nevertheless, I am going to start trying for myself and to share with others. I plan on posting some recipes of meals that are common in our household. But, bear with me! I am new to recording recipes while preparing them.
